Discussion about my dissertation title with/ photo manipulation:

‘IS DIGITAL PHOTO MANIPULATION BEING USED TO MANIPULATE PEOPLE OR IS IT GIVING THEM WHAT THEY WANT?

Angus McDonald (Professional photographer)

Gary Austin (Graphic Designer- Elmwood)

Jo (Food stylist/ Home economist)

Helen Curnock (Product delivery manager- Senoble)

When talking about food photography:

‘Everything is fairly natural now’ –Gary Austin

‘Essentially everything comes down to what the consumer wants, we all want more than what reality has to offer, something more embellished’ – Angus McDonald

‘Supermarkets now want a more natural home baked look rather than a artificial cake or plate of food that’s being retouched’ – Jo

‘You have to pay if consumers complain about your advertising and the product doesn’t look like what it is advertised as, it just makes it harder for us, we try to keep retouching or manipulation to minimum’ – Helen Curnock

‘Symmetry is a form of beauty, as the people we have been taught to see that and that’s what we appreciate’ – Angus

‘People who are photo genetic may not be good looking in real life but may look good behind a camera lens and vise versa, the public like symmetry that’s why these kind of people photograph well’ – Angus

‘Back in the day we use to completely deconstruct products, I remember when I worked on the shoot of a gateaux, you would completely deconstruct the gateau adding layers into it even adding acetate to it so the strawberry sauce slid of perfectly.’ – Jo

PROP MANIPULATION – ‘For some shots you use smaller plates, smaller glasses to make the food or drink look bigger and more succulent’. – Angus
